Instrument Rating

The Accelerated Instrument Rating Course prepares a pilot for the demands of Instrument flight. Since the majority of General Aviation pilots fly as single pilots, we focus on Single Pilot IFR Operations in order to prepare pilots to confidently venture into instrument conditions upon completion of our course.

Each day consists of about 7 to 10 hours of instrument flight education. The Accelerated Instrument Rating Course utilizes a syllabus to organize the course, however we are always flexible according to our students’ needs. The day typically begins at 9:00 A.M. and ends at 5:00 P.M. If it is necessary, some lessons may extend into the evening hours. However, we do realize that students learn much better when their basic needs are met, therefore we always allow more than enough time for eating, sleeping, and general relaxation. We urge students to explore Kansas City after a long day of flying in order to unwind from the rigors of accelerated flight training.

Career Pilot School is extremely flexible when it comes to the aircraft used for this course. If you are an aircraft owner, we highly recommend using your own aircraft as it better prepares you for your real world experience upon completion of the course. The cost of the course in your own aircraft is $3100. If you are not an aircraft owner, Career Pilot School offers a Piper Arrow or Piper Warrior for your use. The Piper Warrior is an economical instrument trainer with a standard panel design. The avionics suite includes Dual Navigation and Communication Radios, Automatic Direction Finder, 4-Place Intercom, and a Basic Autopilot. Cost of the Instrument Rating Course utilizing our Piper Warrior is $7185.

The Piper Arrow is a complex aircraft with an advanced panel design. The avionics suite includes a Sandel SN3500 Electronic HSI, S-Tec 50 autopilot, Garmin GNS 430, and much more. The cost of the Instrument Rating Course utilizing the Piper Arrow is $7615.

All above prices include training materials, flight time up to 43 hours, all flight instruction, unlimited flight simulator use and all ground instruction. If the course cannot be completed within the hours allotted, the student has the option of paying for extra flight time at a per hour rate. In the rare event that this occurs, there is no additional flight or ground instruction charges. Above prices do not include sales tax, housing or the practical test fee.

Instrument Rating Phases

Phase I

During days one through three, you will learn the basics of instrument flight. Climbs and descents, straight and level flight, standard rate turns, and partial panel flight are a few of the topics included in Phase I. Aircraft systems related to IFR flight as well as navigation systems are two of the many ground topics covered.

Phase II

Days three through six are spent on the ground and in the air learning about holding patterns, procedure turns, approaches, departures, and arrivals. We utilize both a simulator and an aircraft during Phase II. The simulator allows us to “freeze? time in order to discuss things as they occur.

Phase III

Day seven is spent putting you through the paces. You can expect to fly many different approaches in the air traffic control system to prepare you for instrument flight upon completion of the program. On day eight, you and your instructor will embark on a long instrument cross-country. You will fly at least three different approaches during this cross-country. Some past destinations include Denver, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Dallas, and many more. The destination is up to you!

Phase IV

Days nine through ten mark the end of your journey to becoming an Instrument Pilot. Day nine will be spent refining your skills and reviewing for the oral and practical exams. Your Instrument Pilot Practical Exam will be scheduled on the final day of the program. We typically schedule the check ride with our Designated Pilot Examiner in the afternoon in order to provide a tune-up session in the morning.
